I was saddened to accidentally come across Jess’ obituary. I knew Jess when he was a young PC, working at Baslow with my father, Bill Dring. The year was 1963ish and as a lad of 6 or 7, I adored and hero-worshipped Jess. He taught me how to box, gave me small gifts of sweets and was always my ‘best friend’. I met him a few other times as the decades passed, and he never failed to remind me of how I had jabbed a rusty safety pin, that I had found in the garden, in his backside as he pushed his bike up the drive……. (I had seen this on the TV in some film, I think). I carry the shame and horror of that event to this day and can only thank Jess again, this time posthumously for his great humour! I have often thought of catching up with Jess, especially since dad passed away in 2020, but sadly that opportunity has now passed. Rest in peace Jess, and my sincere best thoughts and wishes to your friends and family. I shall never forget you.
