It is with sadness that I have to inform you of the death on Tuesday 5th September 2023 of ex D/Superintendent 174 Jess NICHOLLS, 82 years, peacefully at home.  His next of kin is his daughter Jo Nicholls.

Jess retired in about 1998 having served in Matlock, Derby, Alfreton and finally at Force Headquarters, mainly in CID.  He suffered with Parkinsons for the last few years..

His wife Mo passed away on the 24th May 2023.  Jess like Mo will have a direct Cremation with no funeral, as per his wishes.

‘Jess was just the best Dad’.

A note of thanks from Jo Nicholls daughter of ex D/Supt Jess Nicholls

Hi Sean

Just to say a very big, thank you for organising everything on behalf of my dad, Jess…… and thank you for the lovely letter that you wrote, I received it this morning and I have put it on top of the fireplace next to Dads picture

Sean, I’m starting to receive some lovely cards and people are taking the time to write in them……. In fact, I received one from “ little Russ” …. Russell Baker ….. I don’t know him personally, but I was very overwhelmed at what he put in the card. I would really love to say a very big thank you ……to all these people that have kindly written to me. I don’t know if there’s any way that I can put anything on the website, just to say thank you ….. I have found these words very comforting and it makes me feel very proud of dad.

Thank you for all that you have done Sean
Jo

I was saddened to accidentally come across Jess’ obituary. I knew Jess when he was a young PC, working at Baslow with my father, Bill Dring. The year was 1963ish and as a lad of 6 or 7, I adored and hero-worshipped Jess. He taught me how to box, gave me small gifts of sweets and was always my ‘best friend’. I met him a few other times as the decades passed, and he never failed to remind me of how I had jabbed a rusty safety pin, that I had found in the garden, in his backside as he pushed his bike up the drive……. (I had seen this on the TV in some film, I think). I carry the shame and horror of that event to this day and can only thank Jess again, this time posthumously for his great humour! I have often thought of catching up with Jess, especially since dad passed away in 2020, but sadly that opportunity has now passed. Rest in peace Jess, and my sincere best thoughts and wishes to your friends and family. I shall never forget you.
