It is with sadness that I have to inform you of the death on Sunday 20th December 2020 of ex Superintendent 727 Derek Walters, 83 years, after a long illness.  His next of kin is his wife, Mrs Iris Walters.

Derek retired in 1993 whilst Supt in Professional Standards HQ. He served at Clay Cross, Belper, Matlock, and Buxton.  He was for many years Head of Special Branch.

His funeral will be held at 11.00am on Wednesday 13th January 2021 at Amber Valley Crematorium, Swanwick.

Due to current restrictions Derek's cremation will be by invitation only. The crematorium has asked people not to gather outside due to current Covid regulations and there will be no access to the proceedings. Derek's family apologise if you cannot pay your respects in the way you would like to. To enable friends and family to watch the Service, a livestream will be available.

The service can be followed online by following the below  link.

1983? General Election. Moor Lane Sports Centre Derby. Young PC on nights. Ballot box security etc.
Mr Walters (S/B) ensured we had a surreptitious bottle of beer to go with our refs!
Some years later at Chesterfield, post football de-brief after ill tempered local derby. Castigated by Supt Moss for lack of arrests.
Praised by Mr Walters (C/Insp Ops) for keeping the town and its people safe without the need to feel collars.
A good gaffer!

When Derek and I attended the Armistice Day service, he would complain if they did not have ‘his’ hymn which contained the words ‘For those in peril on the sea’. I’m having it my funeral said he. Sorry it has come so soon.
RIP Derek.

Derek was my boss in Special Branch. Good boss, colleague and friend. Always had a ready smile.

RIP Derek. Great character, only ever met with him off duty. The people on my beat only ever had the greatest praise for him and that included his "customers"! Well known, well loved and a great inspiration to many.
