13/12/21 NHS Waiting Times Survey
Please see below message from Claire Reece for information
Sean Murphy (Secretary)
When the pandemic hit, the NHS had to pause lots of people’s treatment. They’re now working hard to get everyone the care they need, but many people are still waiting.
During September and October, you helped Healthwatch Derbyshire (HWD) support a national survey to learn about the impact of planned care/surgery delays for people in Derbyshire and how they have been coping while they wait.
The number of completed surveys from residents in Derbyshire accounted for approximately 10% of those received, we thank you for your help towards this fantastic response. The attached briefing gives a clear understanding of how it feels for those who have been or are still waiting for NHS hospital care and treatment. Please share the briefing or the link below to the summary with your network/members/group who participated.
https://www.healthwatch.co.uk/news/2021-11-08/waiting-lists-are-inevitable-its-how-we-manage-them-matters
The next steps for HWD are underway – taking the insight and recommendations from the research to those within the NHS responsible for overseeing planned care for their consideration and response.
Any queries please contact our team on 01773 880786 [email protected].

01/09/21 Stuart Ludlam Case
Please see below message. Phoenix Television are looking for anyone involved in the case from the Forensic to CID who examined the CCTV’s, who would like to talk. Any responses should be to Mary Litchfield direct.
Sean Murphy (Secretary)
I’m writing on behalf of Phoenix Television, an independent television Production company. We are currently in production on a new TV series commissioned by CBS Reality with the working title “Murder: First on Scene” to be broadcast later this year / early next year in the UK and Worldwide.
We are featuring the case of Stuart Ludlam, the taxi driver who was tragically shot at Cromford station in 2009.
We are hoping to speak with anyone who may have worked on that investigation. If anyone is interested or has any questions I would be very happy to be contacted and to tell them more about the programme.
The series is designed to reveal the dedicated role of professionals who work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice. In particular, it will explore the specific processes used during police investigations from Forensics to Criminal Psychology. We have many years experience of working with sensitive, access-based stories and institutions such as police forces, hospitals and charities.
Best wishes,
Mary Litchfield (Researcher)

25/08/21 State Pension Triple Lock
Further to reports that the Government is considering removing the triple lock on pensions, Later Life Ambitions (LLA), of which NARPO is a member organisation, is urging parliamentarians to back our campaign to safeguard this vital income support for older people.
The state pension triple lock has been critical to maintaining the standard of living of many older people across the country since its introduction in 2011. It guarantees that the basic state pension will rise by a minimum of either 2.5%, the rate of inflation or average earnings growth, whichever is largest.
Attached is a template letter for Members to send to their MP

Hi Everyone.
Time for another update and I'm afraid it's not good news.
HQ is still on a Covid footing until at least 19 July and it's likely then to be a very gradual return to normality. They tell me they will be particularly careful about allowing access to members of the public.
They have advised that we look at the situation again towards the end of the year with a view to possibly re-arranging for the Spring.
There is of course the option of an alternative venue but my view is that even if we could find somewhere suitable it wouldn't make sense to fix a date yet given the ongoing unpredictability of the pandemic.
I doubt any of us suspected that we'd still be in this situation one year on but there's not much we can do about it, just hope for the best.
I propose we think about next April at HQ as a possibility and keep our fingers crossed. That'll hopefully get whatever the winter may throw at us out of the way and leave the summer months free for you to get away on holiday if possible.
I'm sorry I can't be more encouraging.
I've shown the event now as cancelled.
At least we're still here!
Best Wishes

23/06/21 Legion Links Volunteer Opportunities
Please see below message - Ideal for those members wanting Voluntary Work. Any queries should be addressed to the author direct.
Sean Murphy (Secretary)
I’m getting in touch to let you know about The Royal British Legion’s new project, Legion Links.
In short, the Legion Links project intends to create a national network of social groups offering support to carers in the Armed Forces community. The programme aims to help Armed Forces carers feel less lonely and isolated because of their caring role, by supporting them to develop interests, friendships, and engage more with their communities. Each group will be coordinated by two newly created volunteer roles, Support Group Facilitators and Support Group Administrators. At the moment we have two confirmed locations in the Midlands, the National Memorial Arboretum and the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford. We hope to launch support groups at these locations in August 2021.
I’m currently in the process of recruiting volunteers, I’m hoping to recruit 2 Support Group Facilitators, and 1 – 2 Support Group Administrators for each location. We have a Legion Links webpage for more information, as well as having our volunteer roles listed on the website.

08/06/21 Opportunities for Retired Police Officers
Please see below message. SSAFA are looking for volunteers, it would suit any retired members with a military background although this isn’t a criteria. Anyone interested should reply to the author direct.
Sean Murphy (Secretary)
Dear Branch Secretary,
I am writing to introduce myself and let you know about the voluntary opportunities we have available here at SSAFA, The Armed Forces Charity.
Throughout our UK (and overseas) branch network we have found that retired police officers make excellent SSAFA volunteers given their experience of working with the public; affinity with veterans and motivation to help others. Added to this there is increasing evidence that volunteering is good for our physical and mental health – especially for those who have had demanding careers and may find the transition into retirement a challenge.
We would love to work with you to promote volunteering and, in particular our roles at SSAFA. We have a wide variety of opportunities to suit people with a range of skills and availability.
As you may be aware we are the UK’s oldest national tri-service military charity and we support serving personnel, veterans, and their families. Volunteer caseworkers assess the needs of clients and support them to access financial and other types of support. Our branches are volunteer run, so we also recruit people to raise SSAFA’s local profile and co-ordinate things behind the scenes.
If you could share this information with your branch membership, it would be much appreciated. I would also be very happy to meet to discuss any aspect in more detail or attend any relevant meetings or events.
If anyone would like to contact me directly with a query or to be connected with their local SSAFA branch, please do share my contact details below.
Thank you,
Paula Harrison

27/05/21 August NARPO News
Just a reminder that the deadline for letters, news items and articles for the August issue of NAARPO NEWS is 29th June.
In the August issue we are currently considering putting together features on getting back to education after retiring and about taking a on a self-build or major home renovation project after retiring (I’m not thinking some crazy grand designs style project but it would be good to have something more extensive than say an extension) I would be interested in speaking to members who might have done either of these things.
Anyone interested please contact the Secretary and I will put them in touch with the NARPO Business Manager – Carly Scott.

21/05/21 Police Treatment Centres
Calling all Derbyshire Retired Police Officers, have you joined the Police Treatment Centre? The cost is 65p per week which you can arrange to come out of your pension or you can sign up directly with the PTC. https://www.thepolicetreatmentcentres.org/sign-up/SignUpRetired?blog=1
Derbyshire Police use the PTC’s at Harrogate and Auchterarder, Scotland.
Look at their website, www.thepolicetreatmentcentres.org to have all your questions answered. There is a qualifying period of 12 months before you could access the facilities.
I joined a couple of years ago, it is something I do not want to use, but you never know when circumstances change.

21/04/21 Theft of Dogs
Morning all,
On Saturday morning I attended [virtually] the Northamptonshire Branch AGM and during the meeting the Police Fire and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold mentioned the ever growing problem of Dog theft outlining that he had written to Kit Malthouse The Minister of state for Crime and Policing about this issue, The Chief Constable also supports this initiative.
I believe that many of our members will also be concerned about this growing trend, as many of our members will be dog owners.
In view of that I have attached a template letter for members to complete and send to their own local MP to try and influence the debate in Parliament, and hopefully put some pressure on the Government to do more about this type of crime.
Members are encouraged to complete the letter and send to their MP, see link below to find your MP’s contact details.

Hello,
My name is Anna Svorenova and I am a psychology student at Northumbria University in Newcastle. Me and my professor Dr Michael Craig are currently working on research looking at whether people feel that the COVID-19 lockdown has affected their memory (UK). In this project, we are investigating whether the ability to remember events from the past year and more general memory ability has been affected by 12 months of the lockdown and related restrictions. We are looking for as many participants as possible and we thought, that contacting you could be a great platform to ask if there is any possibility to share our questionnaire.
The questionnaire takes approx 20 minutes. We would appreciate it very much, if there would be any way of sharing this questionnaire (I put the questionnaire link below). If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to email me. [email protected]
Thank you.

01/04/21 NARPO Travel Insurance
Following queries from Members re the Travel Insurance, I have contacted Towergate. The below has been added to our website - https://www.narpo.org/life/insurance/travel-insurance/
As you may be aware, we offer our members the option to purchase Standalone Annual Travel insurance via our intermediary Towergate Health & Protection and the insurer AXA Health.
AXA Health has informed us via Towergate Health & Protection of its decision to cease providing this cover to NARPO members.
For members that have purchased standalone Travel Cover via Towergate Health & Protection, this means when their travel cover renews after 1st May 2021, it will be their final 12 months of cover with AXA Health. All affected members will be written to by AXA Health in good time before the renewal date with more detail about the impact on cover for the affected members.
Furthermore, AXA Health will cease to offer travel insurance via Towergate Health & Protection to NARPO members wishing to join (or re-join) the scheme from 31st October 2021.
We have instructed Towergate Health & Protection to source an alternate travel insurance product which can be purchased from them and we hope they will have this in place by summer 2021.
If you require any advice regarding either your existing travel policy, or if you are considering joining the travel insurance scheme, please contact Towergate Health & Protection on 0800 3897724 or email [email protected] .
Please note that any annual travel insurance purchased as an option on an AXA Health Private Medical Insurance plan will continue to renew as usual.

If anyone is aware of any NARPO member who has received an award of any kind, not necessarily in the awards mentioned, then please contact the Secretary.
The NEC have decided that they would like to commence our annual Conference with a video of those members who have received a ‘recognised’ award during the year 1.1.2020 – 1.1.2021 a period which includes the Birthday and New Year’s Honours list.
We are asking for Branches assistance in identifying those who have received awards during this period and ask that the Branch submit the name, award received and a small biography of the reason for the award to Narpo HQ.
The named recipient will then be contacted to seek their permission to include details in the video presentation. They will be asked to provide a photograph and details of the award so this can be used at the beginning of conference, most likely to a background of music, the names and awards would appear on a large screen in the conference hall with a voice over giving details of the award.
A recognised award can include the following:

27/01/21 CONTINUING HEALTHCARE SCANDAL – LEGAL CHALLENGE
Retired Rear Admiral Philip Mathias, supported by his campaign team that includes several retired police officers, has launched a legal action against the Government regarding the NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) scandal.
Unlike Social Care which is means-tested, it is the legal responsibility of the NHS to fully fund an individual's healthcare, in any setting outside of a hospital, if they have an ongoing serious illness such as severe dementia.
The application for a Judicial Review claims that NHS England has failed in this legal duty and has unlawfully denied tens of thousands of very ill people the CHC funding to which they are entitled, often with devastating emotional and financial consequences.
Further information can be found at:

This Continuing Healthcare funding scandal will I am sure, have impacted on many NARPO members and their families, with devastating emotional and financial consequences and I would encourage you to support this campaign to make sure people are treated fairly at the time they need it most.
Regards and stay safe.

06/01/21 New scam around fake Covid-19 vaccination messages
I wanted to flag that the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has received evidence of fraudulent messages being sent to the public informing them a new dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
People are being sent a text message claiming to be from the NHS which informs the recipient that, "we have identified that you are eligible to apply for your vaccine." The message ends with a link to a website mocked up to look like a legitimate NHS platform. The website requests personal details, including name and address and banking details.
The CTSI has said “this is the latest in a series of scams themed around the pandemic in circulation since last March. With the UK vaccine rollout underway, scammers have modified their scam to consider this new development.”
I thought this may be of interest to members and it reminds us to remain vigilant. The CTSI said “The vaccine brings great hope for an end to the pandemic and lockdowns, but some only wish to create even further misery by defrauding others. The NHS will never ask you for banking details, passwords, or PIN numbers and these should serve as instant red flags. Do not provide any information to the scammers, but please also report suspicious messages to Action Fraud, or if in Scotland, Police Scotland, as this provides intelligence and assists authorities in combating scams.”
Regards and stay safe.
