It is with sadness that I have to inform you of the death on Thursday 23rd July 2026, suddenly but peacefully whilst out for his morning walk, of retired Supt John BOWN, 82 yrs. His next of kin is his wife Margaret Bown. A much loved husband to Margaret; father to Joanne, Gareth and Barbara; and grandfather to Rosie, Jess, George, Ryan, Isla, Jack, Ella, Lucy, Millie and Robbie. He started his police career as a Police cadet and became PC 201 in November 1962, aged 19 and stationed in Ilkeston, he went on to serve in Stoney Middleton, North Wingfield, Glossop, Shirebrook, Ripley, Alfreton, Derby as well as secondments to Warrington, Coventry and the Police College Bramshill, serving for 30 years in the police retiring as Superintendent in charge of training school. He then went onto work for Group 4 in the court service before going on to work overseas helping to improve community policing and access to justice in Ethiopia, Jamaica, Nigeria, Sudan and Djibouti, a committed Christian he felt that his faith was lived out through his work in the service to communities. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. A Celebration of John's life will be held at 3.00pm on Tuesday 11th August 2026 at St John's Church, Walton, Chesterfield S42 7LT. All are welcome Richard 'Doc' Watson (Secretary Derbys NARPO)

We knew John and family more through family connections than as a police colleague. A kind man and a lovely family.
